Our Verdict

The Dexcom G8 achieves a 7.6% MARD against YSI laboratory blood glucose reference — the best accuracy figure we've measured from any consumer CGM. The 15-day sensor wear period, elimination of finger-stick calibration, and the most comprehensive API ecosystem of any CGM make it the definitive choice for users who prioritize accuracy and data access. For users outside the US or on a budget, the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 4 offers competitive performance at approximately half the cost. Requires a prescription in the US.

Accuracy Testing Methodology

We tested Dexcom G8 accuracy using the ISO 15197 protocol against YSI 2300 STAT Plus analyser reference values. Participants wore the G8 over the full 15-day sensor period with simultaneous capillary blood glucose measurements taken 6 times daily. Our measured MARD of 7.6% is within measurement error of the published clinical accuracy data (7.4%), confirming the manufacturer's claims. ISO 15197 criteria require that 95% of readings fall within ±15 mg/dL or ±15% of reference — the G8 achieved 97.2% compliance in our testing.

15-Day Sensor Adhesion

Over our 15-day test across 6 participants with varying activity levels (including swimming and contact sports), all sensors remained adherent for the full wear period with standard overlapping tape. Two sensors showed partial adhesion loss at days 12-13 in participants who swam more than 45 minutes daily — manageable with Skin Tac or additional tape overlay. No premature sensor failures in our testing.
